William Blakeney has been legal counsel on
many of Canada's high profile class action, institutional
sexual abuse and environmental cases.
He specializes
in complex insurance litigation, representing insurers in
property & casualty claims, manufacturer's liability and fire
losses.
Bill has an extensive background in
professional liability work including lawsuits against
contractors, engineers and architects. He has
represented prominent Canadian film producers, magazines,
musical instrument manufacturers, record labels, recording
studios and concert promotion companies in publishers, media
and film errors and omissions matters.
In addition to
litigation support, he advises insurers, reinsurance companies
and not for profit corporations on policy wordings and privacy
issues.
He has argued cases at many levels of court
from Federal Court to the Supreme Court of Canada. He has a
long and successful track record, including applications
before administrative appeals tribunals.
Bill lectures
extensively on current insurance topics for the CIP Society,
the Insurance Institute of Canada and the Insurance Bureau of
Canada. He is a featured writer for Without Prejudice and
Canadian Underwriter magazines.
In 2002, he was
presented with the Lew Dunn Award by WICC for his fundraising
efforts with the organization.
Originally from the
Maritimes, Bill obtained an Honours degree in English from the
University of Kings College and an LL.B through Dalhousie Law
Schools' Marine & Environmental Law Program. He is currently a
candidate for an LLM degree in Alternative Dispute Resolution
at Osgoode Hall Law School.
